Nagarhole National Park is also titled as Rajiv Gandhi National Park and is located in the Mysore and Kodagu districts of the Indian state of Karnataka, India. The park is titled after the River Nagarhole that flows eastwards towards the center. The sanctuary was constituted in the year 1955 and is blow-out over an area of 258 Square Kilometers. Over years the reserve gradually extended to cover an area of nearly 644 Square Kilometers and in 1983 it was granted a status of national park.
Owing to its vicinity to the Western Ghats, the area witnesses heavy rainfall throughout the four monsoon months and has a highly humid summer. While Nagarhole’s weather stays true to its tropical location, it’s the flora and fauna that make it worth the trip. The area is the top ecological area in India when it comes to trees like Sandalwood, rosewood, axlewood and teak. Rare species of trees, like the Flame of the Forest, are preserved in the core area of the reserve. The sanctuary remains open throughout the year. The best time to visit the park is in winter and summer months from October to May. During the summer months of April-May the chances of animal’s sightings are more near the water bodies.
Nagarhole is the habitat of species like the Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Indian Wild Dog, Chital, Nilgai, Sambar, Barking Deer and the Indian elephant. Among-st the 300 species of birds, the prominent ones are darters, oriental white ibis, red headed vulture, Malabar grey horn bill and the Indian peafowl. Reptiles, too, slither about in the forest in the form of Indian mugger, rock python, krait and monitor lizard.
